Abstract: Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when administered in sufficient quantities, have a proven beneficial effect on
the host. Their basic characteristic is adhesion to cells of the intestinal mucosa, thereby displacing pathogens. At the same time, due
to the contact of probiotic bacteria with the cells of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), activation of multiple mechanisms of
immunity occurs. Typical goals of probiotic therapy include infectious and acute viral diarrhea as well as diarrhea after irradiation,
inflammatory bowel diseases, Helicobacter pylori infection, and the prevention of allergies and atopic dermatitis.
